Here, the Gauls Asterix and Obelix, this unlikely duo appear as Germanic people under the names Siggi and Barbarras. On the introductory page with the map, the little village is not located in Brittany, but "on the right bank of the Rhine" and is called Bonhalla.
Under the title Siggi et les Ostrogoths, the freedom-loving inhabitants of Bonhalla meet the evil Ostrogoths and their "chief Hulberick", whose dialogue bubbles are not filled with Fraktur text, as in the French original, but with Saxon dialect in red lettering.
Described as a "radical right-wing children's magazine", Rolf Kauka's Asterixlicense was withdrawn. Hence the extreme rarity of this comic.
As with all Asterix adventures, the characters are "Germanized". The Gauls are now West Germans, the Romans occupying Germany are Americans and the Goths are East Germans. As in French, the translation plays with proper nouns, often giving them a political dimension. The Druid Panoramix becomes Konradin, a clear reference to the German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer. The druid Septantesix becomes Franzjosefix, i.e. Franz-Josef Strauß, Prime Minister of the Christian Social Union in Bavaria. The druid Prefix becomes Mendix, the Vice-Chancellor of the Liberal Democratic Party and Minister for German Affairs Erich Mende. Barometrix, Branderix in German, represents Willy Brandt, the Social Democrat mayor of Berlin. The only druid without political connotations is Cicatrix, in German Zikatrix.
27Inthis translation, Goths are East Germans. Their names partly recall politicians (such as Stooferick, Benjaminick, Hullberick), but also ideologies (such as Kapitalistrick and Liberalerick). The leader of the Goths, Teleféric, and the interpreter, Cloridric, are alternately called Hullberick and Sozialisterick and Zimberlick (meaning hypersensitive) and Volksdemokratrick. Two names belong neither to the West German political class nor to an ideology of the two political systems of the time: the Goth Histéric becomes in German Himmlerick, Reich Minister of the Interior, and the soldier Périféric becomes Pardonick. No doubt, for Rolf Kauka, National Socialism and Communism represented equal evils. That's why he didn't hesitate to name one of the Eastern Goths after a Nazi.
28Thenames given to Romans do not refer to politicians, but play on various associations. Only one Roman is named Tschie-Ei, a symbol of the American occupation of Germany.
29Alllinguistic elements are used to transpose Asterix's adventures to Germany. Recitations in particular - whose function is to create the situational context - are massively manipulated. Each episode begins with a presentation of the characters. Siggi, short for the Germanic hero Siegfried, is described as "Hans Geradedurch", who protects his Western Goths from the dangers of fate. Babarras (barras meaning military) is described as the man who won over the eastern Goths and western legionaries with his physical strength. Konradin is the political leader who is called - as Adenauer was - "the old man".
